GICC GUAM INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY CLUB
🇬🇺 Dededo, Guam, GU
Designed by Ronald Fream, Ayako Okamoto
Guam International Country Club occupies a hillside site in Dededo, the most populous village on Guam's northern plateau. The course was designed by Ronald Fream, a California-based architect known for his work throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim, in collaboration with Ayako Okamoto, one of Japan's most accomplished professional golfers. Fream's portfolio includes numerous courses across the Pacific region, and his partnership with Okamoto brought both strategic design expertise and insight into the preferences of the Japanese golf market, which has historically represented a significant portion of Guam's golf tourism.
The layout takes advantage of the island's rolling terrain and tropical vegetation, with elevation changes that provide views across the surrounding landscape. The course serves both the local military and civilian communities as well as visitors from Japan and other Pacific nations. Guam's year-round warm climate and afternoon trade winds influence play, and the course features the characteristic challenges of tropical golf, including dense vegetation framing fairways and the need to account for wind direction on approach shots.
As one of Guam's primary golf facilities, the club functions as both a recreational amenity for residents and a destination for golfers visiting the island. The design reflects the practical considerations of maintaining a course in a tropical island environment while providing a test suitable for players of varying abilities.
