BEAR TRAP DUNES GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Ocean View, DE, USA
Designed by Rick Jacobson

Bear Trap Dunes, on the Delaware shore, presents a study in contrasts, where the rugged beauty of the coastal landscape meets the strategic demands of modern golf. These are actually two distinct courses, Grizzly and Kodiak, siblings cut from a similar cloth, but each possessing its own unique personality.
Designed by Rick Jacobson, both courses leverage the natural dunes and native grasses to create a links-style feel, more reminiscent of the Carolinas than the immediate Delaware coastline. Wide fairways on Grizzly invite aggressive play off the tee, but well-placed bunkers and subtly undulating greens reward calculated approaches. Kodiak, conversely, demands more precision; its tighter corridors and strategically positioned water hazards punish wayward shots. It favors a left to right ball flight, with several dog leg lefts where those with fades will excel.
While Bear Trap Dunes hasn't hosted major championships, its challenging layout and commitment to course conditioning have made it a favorite among regional golfers. Its reputation is built less on national accolades and more on providing a stern, fair test in a stunning setting. The club’s atmosphere is decidedly relaxed, attracting a convivial membership drawn to the spirit of competitive camaraderie. Afterwards, head into the clubhouse for local seasonal favorites like Chesapeake crab cakes, best enjoyed with a cold Dogfish Head brew.
