GRACELAND COUNTRY CLUB
🇿🇦 Secunda, Mpumalanga, ZA
Designed by Gary Player
Graceland Country Club sits in Secunda, a coal-mining and petrochemical town in Mpumalanga province, roughly 140 kilometers southeast of Johannesburg. Gary Player designed the course, which serves the local community and visitors to this industrial region of South Africa's Highveld. The layout reflects Player's characteristic approach to parkland design in the interior plateau, working with the area's grassland terrain and incorporating water features and strategic bunkering.
The course occupies relatively flat to gently rolling ground typical of the Mpumalanga landscape, with fairways lined by indigenous and planted trees that provide definition and frame playing corridors. Water comes into play on several holes, a common element in courses built to serve residential and club communities in this part of South Africa. The design emphasizes accuracy and course management rather than extreme length, making it accessible to members while still presenting challenge through green complexes and hazard placement.
Graceland serves as the primary golf facility for Secunda's residents, many connected to the town's industrial base. The club provides a recreational and social center in a region where golf courses are less densely concentrated than in Gauteng's major metropolitan areas. The setting offers views across the Highveld's open horizons, with the course providing a green contrast to the surrounding industrial and agricultural landscape.
