GORGE VALE GOLF CLUB
🇨🇦 Victoria, British Columbia, CA
Designed by Vernon Macan

Gorge Vale Golf Club sits in Victoria, British Columbia, and traces its origins to the early twentieth century. The course was designed by Vernon Macan, a Canadian architect active in the Pacific Northwest during that era. The club occupies rolling terrain characteristic of southern Vancouver Island, where the landscape transitions between coastal lowlands and forested hillsides. The routing takes advantage of natural elevation changes and mature tree growth that frames many holes.
The course plays through a mix of open and wooded sections, with fairways that move across moderate slopes and greens positioned to reflect the property's contours. Macan's design emphasizes strategic placement over length, requiring golfers to navigate angles and consider how the terrain affects both approach shots and recovery play. Several holes feature doglegs that follow the land's natural fall lines, and green complexes incorporate subtle breaks that reward local knowledge.
Gorge Vale serves as a traditional member club in Victoria's golf community. The facility maintains a year-round playing season, typical of the region's temperate climate, and hosts local amateur competitions. The clubhouse and grounds reflect the club's long-standing presence in the area, with amenities that support both regular member play and social functions. The course remains a steady example of early Canadian golf architecture adapted to Vancouver Island's particular landscape and conditions.
Reviews
The players club of Victoria. A.V. Macan designed this hidden gem in the middle of urban Victoria. If it wasn’t for the sirens racing to a nearby overdose, you wouldn’t know you were in the city. The practice facilities are 10/10– ball pyramids, grass AND mat range, premium balls, 2 practice chipping greens & 2 practice putting greens. Towel service. The course itself is a real challenge, but really fun to play. More uphill shots than down & some massive green complexes with auto 3 putts to be found. Lots of good risk/reward shots that can lead to birdie opportunities. There is also great pride in the membership, boasting the most plus-cap at a private club in Canada — and these are travelling sticks — if you can shoot par at the Gorge, you can shoot par anywhere.
