The Gold Course at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona, opened in 1964 as a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design and represents the architect's only work in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Jones routed the course across relatively flat desert terrain west of Phoenix, incorporating his signature design elements of strategic bunkering, large greens with distinct tiers, and water hazards that demand precise shot-making. The layout underwent renovation work by Forrest Richardson, who maintained Jones's strategic framework while updating agronomic features and playability standards for contemporary golf.

The course plays through mature landscaping that has softened the desert setting over six decades, with tree-lined fairways providing definition and shade in the Arizona heat. Jones positioned bunkers to challenge both tee shots and approach play, with greenside complexes that require thoughtful club selection and execution.
