WAILEA GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Wailea, HI, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
The Gold Course at Wailea is a brute; a layout carved into the volcanic slopes of Maui, where errant shots are swallowed by unforgiving kiawe thickets and elevation changes test both club selection and stamina. Its modern design, a product of Robert Trent Jones II's vision, favors the bold. Wide fairways invite aggressive tee shots, but risk lurks in the strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens that demand a deft putting touch. The ever-present trade winds add another layer of complexity, transforming seemingly benign holes into strategic puzzles.
Though it hasn't hosted major championships, the Gold Course has been a favorite among discerning resort guests seeking a challenging round amidst breathtaking Pacific views. Its reputation rests more on the sheer drama of the landscape and the demanding nature of the design, than storied moments in golf history.
The Gold Course is known as much for its challenging course conditions as it is for its post-round relaxation. Local Wailea residents often conclude play with a celebratory meal at the course's famed restaurant, where the fresh catch of the day is a common favorite. It is a demanding course with rewarding views, creating a memorable golfing experience for anyone seeking a challenge on Maui.
Reviews
Again great views but frustrating golf here. Greens are slow and pace was 5 hours for us in the afternoon, so much so that our 1:30 tee time didn’t get in before their cart cutoff of before 6pm. The layout is decent and it backs up to a challenging length, but the greens are slow and bouncy, so just enjoy the views and don’t worry about great golf
Resort Golf 101: A.) the scenery is 100% B.) you’re going to make tons of birdies C.) Carts Only D.) took forever, no marshals I have a VERY hard time paying a premium for this brand of golf, but sometimes you bite the bullet. Save the money and go for a hike instead.
