Lacoma Golf Club's Gold Course sits in East Dubuque, Illinois, a small Mississippi River town positioned where Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin converge. The course was designed by Gordon Cunningham, a Midwest architect whose work during the mid-twentieth century included several layouts across the upper Mississippi Valley region. The setting takes advantage of the area's characteristic river bluff topography, with elevation changes and wooded corridors typical of courses built along this stretch of the Mississippi.
The routing works through rolling terrain that reflects the region's glacial heritage and river valley geography. Holes move through a mix of mature tree-lined fairways and more open areas, with the natural contours providing both strategic interest and scenic variety. The design reflects the practical, playable approach common to Midwestern courses from this era, emphasizing solid shot values over extreme length or manufactured difficulty.
East Dubuque's location as a border community gives the club a regional draw from the tri-state area. The facility serves both local members and visitors exploring golf options in the Dubuque metropolitan area. Like many courses in smaller river towns, Lacoma functions as a community gathering place where golf fits into the broader social fabric of the region. The Gold Course represents the kind of accessible, well-maintained layout that has sustained recreational golf across the rural Midwest for generations.
Reviews
Beautiful course, the most scenic of the 3. Definitely some tougher holes as a lefty but overall a good track. Will have to re rate this course when conditions are better as I played mid November.
