DALLAS ATHLETIC CLUB
🇺🇸 Dallas, TX, USA
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Ralph Plummer
Dallas Athletic Club's Gold Course, set amongst the rolling hills northeast of Dallas, represents a solid, if not particularly heralded, test of golf. This classic parkland layout, originally conceived in the mid-1960s, winds through mature trees and subtly contoured terrain that requires strategic thinking.
The course bears the distinct mark of Ralph Plummer, a Texas-based architect known for his pragmatic designs. While the Gold Course hasn't undergone any major architectural overhauls, subtle enhancements over the years ensure it continues to challenge members. The fairways generally favor a right-to-left ball flight, and navigating the bunkering effectively is key to scoring well.
Dallas Athletic Club hosted the 1963 PGA Championship. The event was won by Julius Boros, marking a notable moment in the club's history and in the golfing world.
Beyond the course, the club maintains a convivial, Texas-rooted atmosphere. While perhaps not on every national radar, Dallas Athletic Club offers a deeply appreciated golfing experience for its discerning membership.
Reviews
Still a fantastic course but blue is definitely the better of the two in my opinion.
Played a ton of rounds on this course. Got significantly better after a big redo in 2023/2024. Fixed 6th hole which previously had a pot bunker in middle of the fairway and gave a delightfully challenging green complex to the previously bland 7th hole among other changes. I have sentimental sadness for the lost of the iconic 18th, formerly a 3 shot par 5 monster now shortened to a par 4. New par 3 17th makes great use of the water feature. Unequivocally the best value for a private club in Dallas with two fun semi-championship caliber courses on property as well as a hidden short game area built for the SMU golf team with four greens and room to hit up to a 200 yard shot. Sneaky gem!
