GLEN OAK GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 East Amherst, NY, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Glen Oak Golf Course in East Amherst, New York, represents Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s design philosophy applied to the relatively flat terrain of western New York. Jones, who shaped American golf course architecture through the mid-twentieth century with his emphasis on strategic challenge and championship-caliber layouts, brought his characteristic approach to this public facility. The course reflects his tendency to use water hazards, bunkers, and green complexes to create decision points for golfers of varying abilities.
The property sits in the suburban landscape northeast of Buffalo, where the topography offers modest elevation changes typical of the region. Jones worked within these constraints to create a routing that incorporates natural features and introduces artificial hazards to define playing corridors and test shot-making. The design includes the large, contoured greens that became a Jones trademark, requiring careful approach play and thoughtful putting.
Glen Oak serves the greater Buffalo area as an accessible public course that carries the Jones design pedigree. The layout provides a test for accomplished players while remaining playable for recreational golfers, consistent with Jones's stated goal of designing courses that could host competitive events but also accommodate everyday play. The course operates within the context of western New York's golf community, where weather patterns create a defined season and where public facilities play an important role in the region's golf culture.
Reviews
A go to for north Buffalo golfers. Convenient and well-maintained. Nothing special to the layout: flat as can be with a couple unique holes including the 18th. Nice array of par 3s with two very reachable par 5s. Coat has risen in recent years driving down the value. All around a top 5 public course in WNY.
Rating deserves to be higher if you’re only considering every-day public courses; But, given we are rating on same number scales that Augusta, Cypress, etc. are on, this is the number we are at. With that said, I had a fantastic time at Glen Oak. My first NY golf experience was met with top tier conditions for an area that was recently in drought. Some of the rough was patchy, but the fairways, tee boxes, greens all were remarkably well kept. Fun design that can get sneaky long if you want it to. Not the most challenging course per se, but not sure it was meant to be. I had a fantastic experience at Glen Oak.
