Garrison Golf Club, nestled in the Hudson Highlands of New York, presents a challenging test carved from the region's rugged, undulating terrain. This parkland style course, while not a championship venue, is defined by dramatic elevation changes that command attention. Blind shots over rises and thoughtful doglegs add intrigue, requiring a strategic, deliberate approach rather than brute force.
Originally designed by Dick Wilson during the mid-20th century, Garrison's layout reflects a classic sensibility, emphasizing playability and scenic beauty. The course favors those who can navigate its slopes and undulations, rewarding accuracy and thoughtful club selection over sheer distance. The relatively narrow fairways, bordered by mature trees, demand consistent ball-striking.
While Garrison Golf Club may not be a household name on the national stage, its location near the Garrison Institute, a retreat center focused on contemplative practices, has attracted a contemplative-leaning membership. It provides a peaceful respite from the bustling city. Post-round, members often gather to enjoy locally sourced cuisine, reflecting the Hudson Valley's culinary bounty.
Reviews
A course with the best views of the Hudson River and West Point. A course that required accuracy and a steady hand. Penal to a fault if you strayed off the tee. Elevation changes and tight holes through valleys would cause the player to alternate between space and claustrophobic conditions. The a journey was up down over and around, hills, rock outcroppings, streams and ponds. This course, formerly known as North Redoubt, sadly is no more.
