FURNAS GOLF COURSE
🇵🇹 Furnas, Açores, PT
Designed by Mackenzie Ross

Furnas Golf Course occupies a distinctive volcanic landscape in the Furnas Valley on São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago. Designed by Mackenzie Ross and opened in 1936, the course represents one of the architect's less-documented works outside his better-known British designs. The layout sits within a caldera surrounded by lush vegetation, thermal springs, and the geothermal activity that characterizes this region of the Azores. The routing takes advantage of the natural terrain, with elevation changes and the valley's microclimate creating conditions unlike typical European golf.
The course plays through a mix of native vegetation and introduced species, with fairways that follow the contours of the volcanic topography. Water features, both natural and man-made, appear throughout the design, and the proximity to Furnas Lake and the area's fumaroles adds atmospheric elements to the round. The relatively compact yardage reflects both the era of its construction and the constraints of the available land within the valley.
Furnas serves primarily as a resort amenity and attracts visitors exploring São Miguel's geothermal attractions, botanical gardens, and hiking trails. The course remains one of only two golf facilities in the Azores, giving it regional significance despite its remote location. The combination of Ross's design principles and the unusual volcanic setting creates a golf experience distinct from mainland Portugal's better-known courses.
