FURMAN UNIVERSITY GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Greenville, SC, USA
Designed by Kris Spence, MacCurrach Golf, Scot Sherman
Furman University Golf Club, nestled in the rolling foothills just north of Greenville, South Carolina, is perhaps best known as the fertile proving ground that honed the skills of LPGA legend, Betsy King. Carved into the Upstate’s gently undulating landscape, this parkland layout offers a deceptively challenging test. While not overly long, the course favors strategic play, rewarding golfers who can navigate its subtle doglegs and strategically placed bunkers.
Designed by renowned architect, George Cobb, the course reflects a mid-century aesthetic, emphasizing shot-making and thoughtful course management over brute power. The relatively open fairways give a sense of freedom, yet demand precise approaches into well-guarded greens. In particular, the par-4 18th – with its creek crossing and elevated green – provides a memorable and testing conclusion.
Beyond its inviting layout, Furman Golf Club has played host to numerous collegiate events, and serves as the home course for the university's perennially strong men's and women's golf teams. The club enjoys a strong and tightly knit member base which includes many Furman alumni and faculty. While it may not be on many national radars, the club fosters a deep and passionate local golf community.
Reviews
Played right after a hurricane so unfortunately missing a lot of trees, but very pretty course and incredibly well maintained. Tiny pro shop and snack shack sort of thing. Kind of nice not having a clubhouse, and great track for the money.
