Friar's Head

Friar’s Head, carved into the bluffs overlooking the Long Island Sound, represents a modern interpretation of classic linksland principles, a rugged landscape intentionally sculpted to evoke the spirit of seaside golf. The course, built atop a former potato farm near Riverhead, leverages dramatic elevation changes and sandy soils to create a playing experience unlike any other in the region. Errant tee shots are often swallowed by native fescue and sprawling waste areas, where par is no longer an option. Strategic bunkering and undulating greens further demand creativity and precision.

Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Friar’s Head reflects their minimalist design philosophy, prioritizing natural contours and strategic challenge over forced aesthetics. The routing takes full advantage of the property's varied topography, winding through towering dunes and offering stunning views of the Sound from elevated tees. The relatively new course is already considered a must play for golfers visiting the Empire State, a course that favors strategic play and creative shot making.
