FRESHWATER BAY GOLF CLUB
🏴 Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England
Designed by J. H. Taylor

Freshwater Bay Golf Club sits on the western tip of the Isle of Wight, occupying clifftop land above the English Channel near the famous chalk stacks of The Needles. The course was designed by five-time Open Champion J. H. Taylor and opened in the 1890s, making it one of the older layouts on the island. Taylor, who became a prolific course architect after his playing career, routed the holes across downland terrain that offers both elevation change and exposure to coastal winds.
The clifftop setting provides natural drama, with several holes playing along or near the chalk cliffs that define this stretch of coastline. The turf is typical of southern English downland courses, firm and close-cropped where the chalk subsoil drains quickly. Views extend across the Solent toward the mainland and westward to the distinctive rock formations that mark the island's edge. The routing takes advantage of the rolling ground, and wind direction plays a significant role in how the holes present themselves from day to day.
Freshwater Bay operates as a members' club but welcomes visitors, serving both local golfers and those traveling to the Isle of Wight for its coastal scenery and historical sites. The course remains relatively compact and traditional in character, reflecting its late-Victorian origins and the design principles Taylor favored during that era of golf architecture. It offers a straightforward test of links-style golf in a setting shaped more by natural topography than modern earthmoving.
Reviews
This course probably isn’t even close to a 7.5 rating. Really it’s a 6.5 maybe 6.8 at best. But the experience I had here was sensational and comical at the same time. I made an eagle from about 90 yards. The very next hole landed an inch away from a hole in 1. Andy and I played the front 9 in compete sea fog, to the point we couldn’t see more than 5 meters ahead of ourselves, we assumed the course was completely empty. It wasn’t by 11 the sun burned away the fog and left the most insane views over the cliffs of clouds and fog where the sea would be, it look like we were playing on an island in the sky! Truly insane. I will find the images I have of this and attach when I get a chance they don’t even do it justice
