FOSSIL TRACE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Golden, CO, USA
Designed by Jim Engh

Fossil Trace is carved directly into pre-historic terrain, a course where sedimentary rock formations frame fairways and tee boxes are perched atop ancient quarries. Designed by Jim Engh, the modern layout in Golden, Colorado, unapologetically embraces its rugged landscape.
The course snakes through exposed clay pits, requiring players to navigate dramatic elevation changes and strategically placed water hazards. While not overly long, Fossil Trace rewards aggressive play and course management over pure length, favoring those who can shape shots around the imposing rock outcroppings. The experience is less about manicured perfection and more about confronting the raw beauty – and inherent challenge – of the Colorado foothills.
While not a major championship venue, Fossil Trace enjoys a strong local following. It is known for its unique character and its dedication to preserving the area's paleontology – dinosaur fossils have actually been discovered on the property. The clubhouse grill, a popular stop after a round, is known among locals for its hearty Colorado-style cuisine, the perfect end to a memorable, if humbling, day on the links.
Reviews
Played on a rainy day so my group had the course to ourselves. Look for the exposed fossils on 12.
Another unique Jim Engh course. It’s fine. Cool once. Couldn’t play it everyday. A little too quirky for me
One of the most unique courses out there, a lot of interesting on course features and some great (non-golf related) history surrounds a fun layout. It’s such a unique round that I highly recommend grabbing a tee time if you can.
Better than Arrowhead but not better than Bear Dance.
