FORTROSE ROSEMARKIE GOLF CLUB
🏴 Fortrose, The Highlands, Scotland
Designed by James Braid

Fortrose Rosemarkie Golf Club occupies a narrow peninsula on the Black Isle, roughly fifteen miles northeast of Inverness, with the Moray Firth stretching along its eastern boundary. James Braid designed the course in the early twentieth century, working with terrain that offers modest elevation changes and natural linksland character shaped by coastal winds. The layout runs along the shoreline for much of its length, providing views across the firth toward the mountains of Ross-shire and Sutherland. The routing makes efficient use of the available land, with several holes playing directly beside the water and others turning inland across gently rolling ground.
The course measures relatively short by modern standards, but the exposed setting and prevailing winds from the firth create variable playing conditions that demand accurate shotmaking rather than length. Braid's design incorporates natural contours and strategic bunkering that reward local knowledge, particularly on approach shots where the greens can be difficult to hold in firm, breezy conditions. The opening and closing holes provide immediate coastal character, while the middle stretch moves through slightly more sheltered terrain before returning to the water.
Fortrose Rosemarkie serves as a traditional members' club with a welcoming approach to visitors exploring the golf courses of the Highlands. The setting in the historic burgh of Fortrose, with its cathedral ruins and village character, places the course within a quieter corner of Scottish golf, away from the more traveled routes yet offering genuine links golf shaped by one of the era's most prolific architects.
Reviews
Spectacular views on this peninsula sitting in the middle of the Moray Firth. One of the oldest courses in the world, shorter track but difficult considering the constantly changing wind direction. A real treat.
