William Langford, the Chicago-based designer known for his strategic Golden Age layouts throughout the Midwest, shaped the course in the 1920s. His routing takes advantage of natural elevation changes and mature tree corridors that define playing corridors and frame approach shots. Later modifications by Bob Lohmann and David McIntosh refined the layout while preserving the fundamental character of Langford's design.

The course plays through varied topography that includes gentle slopes and several holes with pronounced elevation change, a notable feature in this part of Indiana. Tree-lined fairways demand accuracy from the tee, and greens feature the subtle contouring typical of Langford's work, rewarding players who understand how to use the ground game. Water comes into play on select holes, adding strategic variety to the routing.
