FOREST DUNES GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Roscommon, MI, USA
Designed by Tom Weiskopf

Forest Dunes, carved from the rolling sand hills of Roscommon, Michigan, presents a dramatic counterpoint to the state's more common, tree-lined layouts. A testament to modern design principles, the original Tom Weiskopf course, later enhanced by the revolutionary reversible course called The Loop (designed by Tom Doak), delivers a bold, strategic challenge. The sandy soil lends itself to firm, fast conditions, favoring a ground game and rewarding thoughtful shot placement; the course asks questions of your club selection, not just your ability to smash the ball.
The Loop, a walking-only experience, offers two distinct 18-hole routings, Black and Red, played in alternating directions each day. This innovative approach creates an entirely different strategic landscape, with familiar contours presenting entirely new challenges and sight lines depending on the day.
Beyond the acclaimed courses, the essence of Forest Dunes resides in its understated, almost monastic commitment to the game. Free from pretense and excess, the club prioritizes the pure golfing experience above all else, embracing a spirit of camaraderie amongst its members and guests who share a love for the nuanced artistry of the sport. A welcome departure from the hustle of modern life, Forest Dunes offers a secluded sanctuary dedicated to the timeless appeal of the links.
Reviews
What a really enjoyable experience. I loved the layout and really liked meandering from the forest front 9 to the dunes back 9. Pretty classic Weiskopf. The par 3s are really stunning and that finishing 18th (and really fun 19th) was cherry on top. While the setting was great a GCA nerd would likely not consider this so enticing. I don’t really care though I thought it was a really good time and liked it over The Loop
Forest Dunes is a wonderful parkland course that feels like it's in the middle of nowhere in Michigan. The resort itself is very intimate with a beautiful clubhouse and facilities. The course itself has a completely different feel on the two 9s. The front 9 is much more surrounded by trees and woods, whereas the back is more open with a bigger use of the sand dunes. There are some great risk/reward par 5s with 17 as a driveable par 4. This is the type of place I could play every day, it's nice and secluded and not too busy!
