DESERT WILLOW GOLF RESORT
🇺🇸 Palm Desert, CA, USA
Designed by Dana Fry, Dr. Michael Hurdzan, John Cook
Firecliff is one of two courses at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry in collaboration with PGA Tour player John Cook and opened in 1997. The course occupies terrain at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, where the design team routed holes through natural desert washes and across rolling elevation changes that provide views across the Coachella Valley. The layout makes extensive use of the property's native desert landscape, with fairways defined by natural arroyos and indigenous vegetation including palo verde, ocotillo, and mesquite.
The routing takes advantage of the site's topography, with several holes playing uphill toward the mountain backdrop and others descending through the desert terrain. Hurdzan and Fry, known for their environmental sensitivity in desert projects, preserved much of the natural wash system that runs through the property, incorporating these features as strategic elements rather than simply as hazards. The bunkering style reflects the rugged desert character, with irregular shapes that echo the surrounding landscape.
Desert Willow operates as a public facility, making both courses accessible to daily-fee play. The resort's two courses—Firecliff and the companion Mountain View layout—share similar design philosophies but offer distinct routing experiences across different portions of the property. The courses attract both local desert residents and visitors to the Palm Springs area seeking desert golf in a setting that emphasizes the natural Sonoran landscape character typical of the Coachella Valley's western edge.
Reviews
Feels like Scottsdale. Target desert golf. Great conditions, fun course. Very gettable.
If you need a public round in Palm Springs this is a good spot. Is it special? No? Will you have a good time? Yeah. A very manufactured space and typical desert golf. I would say for the price go play any of the PGA West courses over this though.
Beautiful track, fairways were in great shape but they just totally redid their greens when I went and they were borderline unplayable.
