FINCASTLE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Bluefield, VA, USA
Designed by Dick Wilson

Fincastle, nestled high in the Virginia mountains near Bluefield, is where golf meets Appalachian heritage, a place where a handshake still means something on the first tee. The course itself, a product of the mid-20th century, meanders across rolling parkland. Wide fairways provide some forgiveness off the tee, but subtle undulations and deceptively placed bunkers penalize errant approaches – the course favors a player who can shape the ball and think their way around, rather than simply bomb it.
Designed by a regional architect of some note, Fincastle has remained largely unchanged through the decades, a testament to its enduring playability. The bentgrass greens, often slick and contoured, demand respect and a deft touch with the putter. The views from the elevated tees, particularly on the back nine, are stunning, showcasing the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
While Fincastle has never hosted a major championship, it remains a beloved course for those in the region. The membership, a tight-knit group drawn from the surrounding communities, considers Fincastle a second home. A local's course, Fincastle provides a challenge and a welcome. And more than one match has been decided in the clubhouse over a plate of their famous fried chicken – a tradition as deeply ingrained as the course itself.
