ELKHORN COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Stockton, CA, USA
Designed by Bert Stamps
Elkhorn Country Club sits in Stockton, California, a city in the Central Valley approximately 80 miles east of San Francisco. The course was designed by Bert Stamps, a Northern California architect active primarily in the mid-20th century who designed and remodeled several courses throughout the region. Stamps worked during an era when many California municipal and semi-private courses were developed to serve growing suburban communities, and his designs typically reflect practical routing and straightforward strategic principles suited to the flat or gently rolling terrain common in the Central Valley.
The Stockton area features relatively level topography with mature trees—often oak, sycamore, and eucalyptus—providing definition and character to the holes. Courses in this region tend to emphasize accuracy off the tee and approach play into greens protected by bunkers and occasional water hazards. The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters, allowing year-round play. Elkhorn serves as a traditional country club for the Stockton community, offering members a familiar parkland setting with tree-lined fairways and modest elevation change.
Stockton's golf history includes several established clubs dating to the early and mid-20th century, and Elkhorn fits within this tradition as a member-focused facility. The course provides a straightforward test of golf suited to a range of skill levels, typical of Stamps's approach to design in Northern California's inland valleys.
Reviews
we play a scramble tournament here every year. Narrow fairways, small, fast, and multiple teered greens make this course challenging! its an older course so sometimes you have holes side by side foing the same direction!
