EL PENON GOLF COURSE
🇨🇴 Girardot, Cundinamarca, CO
Designed by Mark Mahannah, Jaime Saenz
El Peñón occupies terrain in the Magdalena River valley near Girardot, a warm-climate municipality in Cundinamarca roughly ninety kilometers southwest of Bogotá. The course was designed by Mark Mahannah and Jaime Saenz, who routed holes across rolling topography that transitions between open grassland and areas framed by native vegetation. The setting reflects the region's tropical dry forest character, with temperatures and conditions that differ markedly from the cooler highland courses near the capital.
The layout takes advantage of natural elevation changes and water features, including several holes that play along or across streams and ponds integrated into the design. Mahannah, who has worked on projects throughout Latin America, collaborated with Saenz to create a course that balances strategic interest with playability in the heat. The routing offers variety in hole length and direction, with prevailing winds and firm turf conditions influencing club selection and approach angles.
El Peñón serves both local members and visitors seeking golf in Colombia's lowland regions. The club functions as a recreational destination in an area known for its resort atmosphere and proximity to the Magdalena, one of the country's major rivers. The course provides an alternative to the higher-altitude layouts that dominate Colombian golf, offering year-round play in a consistently warm climate. Dining and social facilities support the club's role as a gathering place for the Girardot community and weekend travelers from Bogotá.
