EL CAMPANARIO GOLF & COUNTRY HOUSE
🇪🇸 Estepona, Andalucia, ES
Designed by Manuel Pinero
El Campanario occupies a hillside site in Estepona on Spain's Costa del Sol, positioned between Marbella and the Gibraltar strait. Manuel Piñero, a Spanish Ryder Cup player who competed on five European teams during the 1980s, designed the course in the mid-1990s as part of a residential development. The layout reflects the transition period in European golf design when former tour professionals began creating courses that balanced strategic interest with playability for resort and residential members.
The routing works across rolling terrain with elevation changes that provide views toward the Mediterranean and the surrounding Andalusian landscape. The design incorporates natural contours and vegetation typical of the region, with pine, cork oak, and Mediterranean scrub framing many holes. Water features appear on several holes, and the bunkering follows conventional European resort styling from that era. The course measures around 5,800 meters from the back tees, making it accessible to a range of abilities while still requiring thoughtful club selection on approach shots where elevation shifts affect distance.
El Campanario functions primarily as a members' club with limited outside play, serving both permanent residents and seasonal visitors to the Costa del Sol. The property includes accommodation and dining facilities that cater to the golf-and-lifestyle model common to southern Spanish developments. The course fits within the broader context of Estepona's golf offerings, which expanded considerably during the 1990s construction boom along this stretch of coastline.
