GALLOPING HILL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Kenilworth, NJ, USA
Designed by Willard Wilkinson
Galloping Hill Golf Club, a public course in Kenilworth, NJ, bears the distinction of being the first course in New Jersey to host a U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Its gently rolling parkland terrain, a welcome respite from the denser suburban landscape of Union County, features tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers that subtly penalize errant shots. Though not overwhelmingly long, Galloping Hill's layout favors players who can work the ball, rewarding well-placed drives and approaches over sheer power.
Originally designed by Willard G. Wilkinson in 1928, the course underwent a significant renovation in 2001 by Steve Smyers, enhancing its playability and aesthetics while maintaining its classic character. In 2016, Galloping Hill hosted the New Jersey State Open, showcasing its ability to challenge both seasoned professionals and amateur golfers alike.
While not a name synonymous with the nation’s most storied clubs, Galloping Hill holds a unique place in the local golf landscape, offering a challenging and accessible golfing experience for the public player. The club is particularly known for its active and engaged golfing community, who have embraced it as a true "home course," fostering a welcoming atmosphere for golfers of all skill levels.
Reviews
Not a bad layout for a public, but greens were extremely slow, basically like putting on the fairway. Back nine completely underwater every time it rains. A few cool views, but not anything amazing.
