Eastern Shore at Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club

Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club sits on Virginia's Eastern Shore near Melfa, a rural community on the Delmarva Peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Ed Ault designed the course, which opened in the mid-1970s as part of a residential and recreational development. Ault, a regional architect active primarily in the Mid-Atlantic during the 1960s and 1970s, built numerous courses across Virginia, Maryland, and neighboring states, typically working with rolling to gently undulating terrain and incorporating water features where natural drainage allowed.

The course occupies relatively flat coastal plain topography characteristic of the Eastern Shore, with modest elevation changes and stands of pine and hardwood framing the holes. Water comes into play on several holes, reflecting both the low-lying landscape and Ault's design approach. The layout serves a private membership drawn largely from seasonal residents and local families, with the club offering both golf and yachting amenities that reflect the region's maritime culture.

The Eastern Shore remains somewhat isolated compared to more densely developed parts of Virginia, and the club functions as a social and recreational hub for the area. The course provides a straightforward test suited to a range of skill levels, with tree-lined fairways and strategically placed hazards typical of Ault's work from this period. It represents a piece of the region's modest golf development during the resort and second-home expansion of the 1970s.
