UPPER MONTCLAIR COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Clifton, NJ, USA
Designed by A .W. Tillinghast, Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Upper Montclair Country Club's East/West course, one of three on the property, presents a uniquely challenging, and yet accessible experience in northern New Jersey. Woven into the rolling hills of Clifton, this layout exemplifies early 20th-century parkland design.
Originally crafted by A.W. Tillinghast, the East/West routing reveals his signature strategic bunkering and subtly contoured greens. Later enhancements from Brian Silva restored much of Tillinghast's original intent while subtly modernizing the playing experience. The course itself requires deft course management, favoring players who can shape their shots and navigate the doglegs that define many of the holes.
Beyond the golf, Upper Montclair boasts a notably inclusive membership. While its sister courses have hosted some high-level competitions, East/West has quietly gained a reputation as a gathering place for members of all skill levels, and a favored spot for the club's frequent member-guest events. It's also rumored that the halfway house serves up some of the area's best Italian hot dogs, a local delicacy fiercely debated among connoisseurs.
