East Course
Madison, WI, USA

Yahara Hills Golf Club's East Course is a municipal facility located in Madison, Wisconsin, designed by Art Johnson, a regional architect who contributed numerous layouts to the Midwest's public golf landscape during the mid-twentieth century. The course serves the Madison area as an accessible daily-fee option and reflects the straightforward, playable design philosophy common to municipal courses of its era. The routing occupies gently rolling terrain characteristic of southern Wisconsin's glacially shaped landscape. The property features mature tree-lined fairways and modest elevation changes that add visual interest without creating severe walking demands. Water hazards and bunkers are distributed throughout the layout in a manner typical of Johnson's work, providing challenge for better players while maintaining playability for recreational golfers. As part of the Yahara Hills complex, the East Course operates alongside other layouts on the property, contributing to the facility's role as a high-volume public golf destination. The course accommodates a diverse membership base ranging from junior golfers and beginners to experienced players seeking convenient, affordable golf in the Madison metropolitan area. The facility emphasizes accessibility and pace of play, serving both league play and casual rounds throughout the season. The course conditions and maintenance standards reflect its municipal status and heavy play volume, with the layout providing functional golf in a parkland setting without the refinements of private club presentation.
City of Madison is getting rid of 18 holes of the current 36 holes but can't remember which course. It could be an okay course but budget cuts and some city neglect have left many of the city's muni course in bad shape. Yahara would rank ahead of Monona, but way behind Odana and The Glen for my Madison muni course rankings. Course is next to landfill and has a lot of wet marsh conditions around it. They really should pick best 18 holes and invest in the course to make it much nicer but they won't. With that said the Madison City Golf Pass is a great asset to youth players in the area.
