FOREST AKERS MSU GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 East Lansing, MI, USA
Designed by Bruce Matthews
The East Course at Forest Akers MSU Golf Club serves as one of two championship layouts owned and operated by Michigan State University in East Lansing. Designed by Bruce Matthews and opened in 1958, the course was built to provide both a competitive collegiate venue and a public golf facility for the university community and regional players. Matthews, a Michigan-based architect active in the mid-twentieth century, created a layout that reflects the parkland character typical of the upper Midwest, with tree-lined fairways and modest elevation changes across the rolling terrain.
The routing takes advantage of the natural landscape, incorporating mature hardwoods and strategic bunkering to define playing corridors and frame greens. The course measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, offering sufficient length and challenge for collegiate competition while remaining accessible from forward tees. Water features come into play on several holes, adding variety to the strategic demands. The East Course has hosted numerous Michigan State golf events and regional amateur tournaments over the decades, serving as a home course for Spartan men's and women's golf teams.
As a university-owned facility, Forest Akers East maintains a welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere. The course attracts a mix of students, faculty, alumni, and public players, contributing to a straightforward golf experience focused on the game itself. The setting within the East Lansing area provides convenient access for those visiting the MSU campus or the surrounding mid-Michigan region.
