AKAGI KOKUSAI COUNTRY CLUB
🇯🇵 Maebashi, Gunma, JP
Designed by Ishii Shigeru
The East Course at Akagi Kokusai Country Club sits in the foothills near Mount Akagi, one of the prominent volcanic peaks in Gunma Prefecture north of Tokyo. Designed by Ishii Shigeru, the course reflects the work of an architect active during Japan's golf development boom in the mid-to-late twentieth century. The routing takes advantage of the naturally rolling terrain characteristic of this volcanic region, where elevation changes and wooded corridors shape the playing experience.
The landscape here features a mix of mature trees—predominantly pine and deciduous species—that frame fairways and define strategic lines of play. The topography creates holes with both uphill and downhill shots, and the design incorporates the natural contours into green complexes and approach zones. Water features appear on several holes, typical of Japanese course design from this era, adding both visual interest and strategic considerations for club selection and shot placement.
Akagi Kokusai serves a membership drawn largely from the Gunma and northern Kanto region, offering a retreat from the urban centers while remaining accessible to golfers from Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. The club maintains traditional Japanese country club standards in both course conditioning and clubhouse hospitality. The East Course operates as part of a multi-course facility, providing variety for members and visitors who return regularly to play different layouts within the same mountain setting.
