EAGLE STICKS GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Zanesville, OH, USA
Designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan
Eagle Sticks Golf Club sits in the rolling terrain of southeastern Ohio near Zanesville, a region characterized by wooded hillsides and natural elevation changes. Dr. Michael Hurdzan designed the course, which opened in the mid-1990s. Hurdzan, an Ohio native and agronomist by training, built a reputation for environmentally conscious designs that work with existing landforms rather than imposing artificial features. His routing at Eagle Sticks takes advantage of the property's natural contours and mature tree cover.
The course plays through a mix of open and wooded corridors, with several holes featuring significant elevation change. Hurdzan incorporated strategic bunkering and green complexes that reward thoughtful course management over pure length. The layout includes risk-reward opportunities where players can choose aggressive lines or safer routes depending on conditions and skill level. Water comes into play on select holes, typically integrated into the natural drainage patterns of the site.
Eagle Sticks serves as a daily-fee facility accessible to the public, drawing golfers from the Zanesville area and the broader Columbus-to-Pittsburgh corridor. The course has hosted regional amateur events and qualifiers over the years. Its design reflects Hurdzan's philosophy of creating golf that suits a range of abilities while maintaining strategic interest for accomplished players. The property's wooded setting and varied topography give it a distinct character within Ohio's golf landscape.
Reviews
This course used to be incredible. When I played this season, the fairways were burnt to a crisp, etc. Such a fun layout. A shame it’s gone down hill like it has.
EagleSticks absolutely rocks. We need more places like this in public golf. It forced me to hit every club in my bag except two, shape the ball both ways, and forced me to hit some approach shots high and some approach shots you had to run up. The layout at EagleSticks absolutely rules and no two holes have the same routing. Additionally, I don’t think any hole plays the true distance it says on the card. The architect did a great job using uphill and downhill slopes to design some extremely fun holes. The true highlights of this course are the short par 3s (see my absolute dart on the par 3 17th below) and par 4s. They give you a false sense of security that you can be aggressive, but if you miss by just a little bit that birdie chance can turn into a double bogey real quick. The other highlight of EagleSticks are the greens. The undulation on the greens are incredible. I thought the greenskeeper did a fantastic job setting the pins the day I played. If you hit your approach shot high of the hole you were instantly at risk for a 3 putt even from short range. Overall, I highly recommend making the drive out to EagleSticks if you are in the surrounding area. You will find an absolute hidden gem of a golf course at an affordable rate.
