The course sits on the relatively flat to gently rolling terrain characteristic of the Highveld, at an elevation above 1,700 meters where the thin air affects ball flight noticeably. The routing reflects the practical constraints of mine property boundaries and the need to work around existing infrastructure. Tree-lined fairways and modest bunkering define the playing corridors, and the greens tend toward simple shapes suited to maintenance by mine staff rather than specialized grounds crews. Durban Deep serves primarily as a members' club for the local community in the western suburbs of Johannesburg, maintaining the social and recreational traditions of South African mine golf clubs even as the mining industry's prominence has diminished. The course offers accessible golf in a region where the sport has deep roots tied to the gold rush era, and it preserves a piece of the Witwatersrand's industrial and sporting heritage.
