CALLAWASSIE ISLAND CLUB
🇺🇸 Okatie, SC, USA
Designed by Tom Fazio
Callawassie Island Club sits on a private island in the South Carolina Lowcountry near Okatie, between Hilton Head and Beaufort. Tom Fazio designed the 27-hole layout in the early 1980s, creating three nine-hole courses—Dogwood, Palmetto, and Magnolia—that can be combined into different 18-hole configurations. The Dogwood/Palmetto combination represents one of these pairings, routing through the island's natural terrain of tidal marshes, maritime forests, and wetlands characteristic of the coastal Carolina landscape.
Fazio's design works with the property's flat topography and abundant water features, incorporating the tidal creeks and marshlands that define Lowcountry golf. The courses wind through stands of live oaks, palmettos, and pines, with strategic bunkering and water hazards providing the primary challenge on relatively level ground. Generous fairways accommodate resort-style play, while green complexes offer more nuanced short-game tests. The routing takes advantage of marsh views and the island's natural beauty without requiring forced carries beyond the capabilities of recreational players.
Callawassie Island operates as a private residential community with golf as a central amenity. The club serves its membership with traditional Lowcountry hospitality and maintains the courses as part of the island's overall lifestyle offering. The setting provides the seclusion and natural environment typical of South Carolina's coastal island developments, where golf integrates with the broader residential experience rather than standing alone as a destination facility.
