Deer Creek State Park at Deer Creek State Park Golf Course

Deer Creek State Park Golf Course sits within Deer Creek State Park in south-central Ohio, roughly forty miles southwest of Columbus near the town of Mount Sterling. Designed by Jack Kidwell and opened in the mid-1960s, the course was developed as part of Ohio's state park system initiative to provide public golf facilities in scenic recreational settings. Kidwell, an Ohio-based architect who designed numerous municipal and public courses throughout the Midwest during the postwar era, routed the layout across rolling terrain characteristic of the region's glaciated plains, incorporating natural elevation changes and wooded corridors into the design.

The course plays through a mix of open and tree-lined holes, with Deer Creek Lake visible from several points on the property. The routing takes advantage of the park's varied topography, featuring holes that move through stands of mature hardwoods and others that play across more exposed, gently rolling ground. Water comes into play on a handful of holes, and the green complexes reflect the straightforward, playable design philosophy common to public courses of the period.
