INDIAN BAYOU GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Destin, FL, USA
Designed by Earl Stone
Indian Bayou Golf Club's Creek and Seminole nines form two-thirds of a 27-hole facility designed by Earl Stone and opened in the mid-1980s in Destin, Florida. Stone, a regional architect active across the Gulf Coast during this period, routed the courses through native wetlands and pine forests characteristic of the Florida Panhandle. The property sits inland from the Gulf beaches, where natural drainage patterns and bayou systems influenced the layout and created strategic water hazards throughout.
The Creek nine takes its name from the natural waterways that thread through several holes, requiring carries and approach shot precision. The Seminole nine, named in the regional tradition honoring Native American heritage, features a similar mix of water hazards and tree-lined fairways. Both nines incorporate elevation changes modest by Florida standards, with greens that typically feature gentle contours suited to the sandy subsoil. Bermuda grass covers fairways and greens, standard for the climate and maintenance practices of Northwest Florida daily-fee courses.
Indian Bayou serves primarily as a public-access facility in a market dominated by resort and vacation golf. The 27-hole configuration allows for varied pairings and pace-of-play management during peak tourist seasons. The course reflects the design priorities of its era: resort-friendly playability from multiple tees, water features for visual interest and challenge, and routing that preserved natural areas while accommodating real estate development common to Destin-area golf properties.
