COUNTY LOUTH GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Drogheda, Louth, IE
Designed by Tom Simpson

County Louth, affectionately known as Baltray, is where the Irish Sea whispers tales of Hogan's clandestine practice rounds before his unexpected British Open bid. The links, sculpted in the Golden Age and refined by subsequent hands, unfurl across rumpled dunes where gorse blooms riotously against the ever-present wind. While seemingly generous from the tee, Baltray exacts a toll for waywardness – the undulating fairways bleed into thick, unforgiving rough, demanding a precise understanding of ground contours and windage.
Originally laid out by Tom Macauley, with further contributions from Des Smyth, Baltray's character is one of subtle deception. The course favors strategic play over sheer power; deft iron shots and a mastery of the bump-and-run are rewarded handsomely. More than a few scorecards have been humbled by the blind tee shots and deceptive carries that demand respect and a measured approach.
Baltray hosted the Irish Open in 2004 and 2009, events etched into the local memory not only for the spectacle, but also the impromptu sing-alongs that spilled out from the clubhouse late into the night. Baltray remains a respected links, its charm not derived from international acclaim, but instead from the unique embrace of its community, and its enduring role as a crucible for Irish golfing passion. The members are known for their down-to-earth approach and welcoming spirit, and for their deep understanding of the course's many quirks. The clubhouse chatter is of tide times and prevailing winds, a testament to the intimate relationship between this club and its coastal home.
Reviews
Fantastic links course, just a cut below some of the championship level courses that surround it on the island
Used to always play with a member so we got great value here, I know it’s pricey outside of that. Typically in great condition and one of the most rewarding links courses when you play well, seems if you’re hitting it good you don’t get any of the bad luck some other links can inflict on you. The food in the restaurant is top notch always too.
