THE COUNTRY CLUB OF INDIANAPOLIS
🇺🇸 Indianapolis, IN, USA
Designed by Pete Dye, Tom Bendelow

The Country Club of Indianapolis occupies rolling terrain in the northern part of the city, with a design history that spans nearly a century of American golf architecture. Tom Bendelow laid out the original course in the 1920s during his prolific period of Midwestern design work. Pete Dye, an Indiana native who grew up playing golf in Indianapolis, later reimagined the layout, bringing his characteristic strategic emphasis and architectural detail to the property.
Dye's routing makes use of the natural elevation changes and mature tree corridors that define the landscape. The course features the design elements associated with his work—strategic bunkering, varied green complexes, and holes that reward thoughtful course management over pure distance. The property's wooded character and rolling topography provide natural separation between holes while creating distinct playing corridors throughout the round.
The club has maintained a presence in Indianapolis society since its founding in the early twentieth century. Its membership has traditionally included business and civic leaders from the Indianapolis area, and the club functions as both a golf facility and a social institution with dining and family programming. The course itself reflects the evolution of American golf design, moving from Bendelow's straightforward early framework to Dye's more complex strategic architecture.
The Country Club of Indianapolis represents a regional example of how classic American courses have been adapted by later architects, particularly in cases where a prominent designer returns to work in his home state.
