CRAFT FARMS GOLF RESORT
🇺🇸 Gulf Shores, AL, USA
Designed by Arnold Palmer, Ed Seay

Cotton Creek at Craft Farms Golf Resort stands as Arnold Palmer’s inaugural foray into Alabama golf, its design reflecting a player's perspective on playability and challenge. Carved from the coastal landscape of Gulf Shores, the course presents a deceivingly gentle test that rewards strategic thinking more than raw power. Fairways are generous, inviting the tee shot, but approach angles tighten considerably, demanding precise iron play to undulating greens protected by subtle bunkering. The prevailing coastal breezes often dictate club selection, adding a layer of complexity to even the most straightforward holes.
Palmer’s design philosophy is evident in the course's routing, which meanders through natural wetlands and stands of mature pines, creating a sense of seclusion despite its proximity to the resort. While not hosting professional championships, Cotton Creek has long served as a respected venue for regional amateur events and qualifiers, a testament to its fairness and consistently excellent conditioning. The course favors a drawl, however those who favor the fade can manage the challenge.
The resort’s understated charm extends to the Cotton Creek clubhouse, a welcoming hub where post-round conversation often revolves around the day's triumphs and tribulations. While not nationally renowned, the course enjoys a strong reputation within the Alabama golfing community, appreciated for its accessibility and the consistently enjoyable experience it provides. This makes it a good choice for casual golfers.
Beyond the course, the sense of camaraderie extends to the 19th hole, where locals and vacationers alike gather. One particular point of pride lies in their famous 'Swamp Burger,' a local favorite, claimed to be the best burger on the Gulf Coast, served on toasted brioche with a mountain of pulled pork.
Reviews
I've played both courses at Craft Farms, but different years. Really have no issues with either course. Both were average to above average courses but also neither had that feel of I can't wait to come back to play these again. Cypress is maybe just a little better than Cotton Creek, but both are very similar.
