ST. GEORGE'S HILL GOLF CLUB
🏴 Weybridge, Surrey, England
Designed by Harry S. Colt

St. George's Hill Golf Club occupies a distinctive wooded estate in Weybridge, Surrey, approximately twenty miles southwest of London. Harry Colt designed the original layout in the 1910s on sandy, heathland soil that rises and falls through mature pine, birch, and rhododendron. The Composite course combines eighteen holes drawn from the club's two full layouts, selecting what are generally considered the strongest holes from each to create a championship test. This routing takes advantage of the property's natural elevation changes and the quality of the free-draining turf.
The course moves through corridors of trees with fairways that often require shaped tee shots to navigate doglegs or avoid encroaching vegetation. Colt's bunkering remains a defining feature, with deep, revetted hazards positioned to challenge both driving zones and approaches. Greens are typically well-contoured and can be difficult to hold with anything but precise iron play. The terrain provides a variety of stances and lies, and several holes play across or along slopes that add complexity to club selection and strategy.
St. George's Hill has long been a private members' club with a reputation for exclusivity and traditional club culture. The estate itself includes residential properties alongside the golf facilities, contributing to a secluded, parkland atmosphere. The Composite routing has hosted regional amateur competitions and serves as the primary championship course when the club holds significant events. The design reflects Colt's characteristic attention to natural landforms and his preference for strategic variety over length alone.
