COMMONWEALTH NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Horsham, PA, USA
Designed by Arnold Palmer
Commonwealth National is a stern test of golf carved into the rolling hills of Horsham, Pennsylvania, where mature hardwoods frame each hole, demanding both power and strategic acumen. Designed in the late 1980s, its relatively modern architecture eschews tricked-up features in favor of classical principles: challenging approaches, subtly contoured greens, and ample bunkering that punishes imprecision, favoring those who can shape the ball off the tee. The course often rewards a right-to-left ball flight, particularly on its demanding par-4s.
Originally conceived by Gary Player Design, Commonwealth National has seen subtle refinements over the years, ensuring its playability without sacrificing its inherent challenge. While not a regular fixture on the professional tour circuit, the club has hosted numerous regional amateur events, providing a competitive proving ground for aspiring golfers in the Philadelphia area.
The club maintains a strong local reputation as a challenging but fair test of golf, and is known for its active membership. A friendly rivalry with nearby clubs, particularly regarding annual interclub matches, adds to the course's spirited atmosphere. Post-round, the clubhouse is known for its hearty fare, especially its renowned crab cakes, a local delicacy that has become a staple among members and guests alike.
Reviews
Course moves in and out through a corporate center. The putting green was in very poor shape and did not accurately reflect green speeds. The course had a lot of strategic holes in which you had to lay up on par 4s. I did not feel that it was as narrow as others have said.
