THE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Brookline, MA, USA
Designed by Willie Campbell
Home to the 1913 U.S. Open, where a young amateur named Francis Ouimet stunned the golfing world, The Country Club in Chestnut Hill remains a bastion of classic New England golf. The course is a composite of three nines, each contributing to a demanding and varied test.
Initially laid out by Willie Campbell, the course's Golden Age bones are evident in the rolling terrain, fescue grasses, and deceptively challenging greens. It plays tight in spots, favoring players who can work the ball both ways. While not exceptionally long by modern standards, strategic bunkering and undulating fairways put a premium on shot placement over brute force. The 1999 Ryder Cup showcased the course's match play drama to a global audience, and in 2022, it welcomed another U.S. Open, further solidifying its place in championship golf history.
Though a club steeped in tradition, it's not known for stuffiness; the membership reflects a blend of old Boston money and accomplished newcomers. The club is a gathering place for those who value both sporting excellence and the quiet elegance of its surroundings, where players quietly engage in friendly competition but always take pride in the game's integrity.
Reviews
Beautiful course, cool layout, amazing locker rooms and bar, oozes history, quintessential New England
Beautifully historic and major championship worthy. Many memorable holes and amazing hospitality. So much more than just a golf club.
Honestly, some forgettable holes. I did NOT play the composite, so that could be why.
Where I learned to play the game, so it holds a special place in my heart. The Main course has many fantastic holes, draped over fairly severe rock outcroppings and elevation changes for Boston. A true test of your entire game
Good course but not particularly memorable years later. Great logo :)
MA-heads who have played the best of the best may claim this is overrated - but I disagree. Even stripping away the ambiance, this place has an exceptional variety of par 3s, 4s, and 5s. It demands precision and shot shaping. Essex county is the most fun I’ve had in MA, but this is overall the best design in MA.
