ROSE HALL - CINNAMON HILL GOLF CLUB
🇯🇲 Montego Bay, Cornwall, JM
Designed by Rick Baril, Robert von Hagge
Cinnamon Hill, carved into the undulating landscape of Rose Hall, is where the ghost of Annie Palmer, the White Witch, is said to oversee play, a persistent reminder of the land's dramatic history intertwined with its golfing present. The course itself is a compelling study in contrasts, beginning as a seaside challenge before ascending into the verdant foothills of the Jamaican mountains.
Designed originally by Hank Smedley, with later enhancements by Rick Baril, Cinnamon Hill presents golfers with a strategic test. The early holes navigate the coastal plains, rewarding bold play and offering glimpses of the Caribbean Sea; the inland holes require a different strategy, with tighter fairways, elevation changes and dense vegetation placing a premium on accurate iron play. It's a course that favors the thoughtful player, rewarding intelligence over brute strength.
While Cinnamon Hill has not hosted major championships, it retains a unique appeal. The club is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere and local cuisine, particularly their jerk chicken - a post-round ritual as essential as the first tee jitters. It's a place where the spirit of Jamaica infuses every round, a captivating blend of golf, history, and the island's vibrant culture.
Reviews
Cinnamon Hill in Montego Bay is another solid resort course in the area, but it definitely shows more wear and tear compared to Half Moon. The conditions in Jamaica are always tough to maintain with the heat and humidity, and Cinnamon Hill tends to get a lot more play, which you can feel in the pace and overall course shape. The range setup is there, but it’s hit or miss — literally. They hand-pick balls off the range, so it’s pretty common to show up and find no balls available to warm up with. Not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind if you like to get a full session in before teeing off. The layout itself is fun, though. There’s a really nice 5–6 hole stretch with a few holes that run right along the water before climbing back uphill into some elevated terrain. It’s a cool mix of views and shot types that makes for an enjoyable round. Overall, Cinnamon Hill is a fun course to play if you’re in the area and want to mix things up, but it’s not necessarily one I feel the need to play every year. Half Moon has the edge on service and condition, but this one still has its moments and a few really memorable holes.
Overall the course has good bones and some very nice holes on the water. Conditions were not ideal The driving range is a small grassy area where a guy retrieves the balls by hand. He also try’s to sell you a bunch of Pro V’s he’s accumulated throughout the course Caddie didn’t really help much. It was mandatory but not necessary. Overall wouldn’t play golf in the area again
