WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Fort McDowell, AZ, USA
Designed by Scott Miller

Cholla at We-Ko-Pa, carved from the rugged Sonoran Desert near Fort McDowell, is defined by its unapologetically raw landscape. Designed by Scott Miller and opened in 2001, the layout is a testament to minimalist architecture, working with, not against, the severe beauty of its surroundings.
Cholla, unlike its sister course Saguaro, doesn't shy away from a challenge. It presents demanding forced carries over arroyos and natural washes. Wide fairways provide visual relief, but strategic bunkering and undulating greens demand thoughtful club selection and precise approaches. This is a course that favors players who can navigate the terrain's natural contours and play with a strategic mindset.
Beyond the course's undeniable challenge, We-Ko-Pa maintains a deep respect for its Native American heritage. Owned and operated by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the club’s commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural preservation is woven into its ethos. This cultural emphasis is what gives We-Ko-Pa its soul, a palpable connection to the land that goes beyond the game.
While lacking the storied tournament history of some other Southwest courses, Cholla possesses a distinct character. Locals hold it in high regard, appreciative of its demanding layout, unyielding authenticity, and how it captures the essence of desert golf as few others can. And while the halfway house doesn’t boast any particularly famous culinary creations, the simple pleasures of enjoying a cold drink while overlooking the vast desert landscape after a challenging nine is a tradition embraced by those who frequent these fairways.
