BIG CANOE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Jasper, GA, USA
Designed by Joe Lee
Choctaw and Cherokee nines at Big Canoe Golf Club are mountain golf etched into the rugged, picturesque terrain of the North Georgia foothills. Carved in the early 1970s during an era that favored dramatic land shaping, the course, originally conceived by Joe Lee, presents a challenge defined by its undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers, favoring those who can manage elevation changes and blind approaches.
The layout snakes through a landscape defined by towering pines and hardwood forests, demanding careful club selection and an accurate sense of distance control. While not a championship venue, the course has played host to numerous regional amateur events, fostering a competitive spirit among its membership—a group known for their ardent love of the game, and convivial post-round gatherings at the clubhouse known for its hearty, southern inspired grill.
Big Canoe's lore includes tales of errant shots finding their way into the neighboring Lake Petit, as well as the local legend of course record never being broken, and remains a point of local pride, a testament to the challenge presented by Lee's design.
