CHICKASAW COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Memphis, TN, USA
Designed by William Langford

Chickasaw Country Club sits in Memphis, Tennessee, featuring a course designed by William Langford, the Chicago-based architect who worked extensively across the Midwest and South during the 1920s and 1930s. Langford, often in partnership with Theodore Moreau, developed a reputation for strategic designs that emphasized thoughtful shot placement over sheer length, incorporating natural terrain features into routing that rewarded course management. His work at Chickasaw reflects the design principles of the golden age, when architects sought to create variety and interest within the landscape available to them.
The course occupies rolling terrain characteristic of the Memphis area, with tree-lined fairways and greens that typically feature the subtle contouring and strategic bunkering common to Langford's portfolio. His designs from this era generally favored diagonal hazards, angled approaches, and green complexes that offered multiple pin positions and recovery options. The layout provides a traditional country club experience within an established residential setting, serving a membership drawn from the Memphis community.
Chickasaw Country Club functions as a private facility with the social and recreational programming typical of American country clubs from its era. The club maintains traditions of member golf, family activities, and dining that have evolved over decades of operation. For those familiar with Langford's broader body of work—including Lawsonia Links in Wisconsin and various courses throughout Illinois—Chickasaw represents his design approach adapted to the topography and climate of the Mid-South.
Reviews
Layout could be better but a fun course to play that’s always in excellent conditions. Land locked so unable to expand and not much of a range. Fast greens and really fun when the course is playing firm and fast. Definitely one where you have knowledge of the course to gain an advantage.
