CHERAW STATE PARK GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Cheraw, SC, USA
Designed by Tom Jackson

Cheraw State Park Golf Course sits within a 7,361-acre state park in the Sandhills region of northeastern South Carolina, near the North Carolina border. Designed by Tom Jackson and opened in 1970, the course occupies rolling terrain characteristic of the Sandhills belt, where sandy soils and natural elevation changes create a distinctive playing environment. The layout takes advantage of the park's pine forests and native vegetation, with holes routed through corridors of longleaf pine and hardwoods that frame fairways and define the character of the property.
The course measures approximately 6,800 yards from the back tees and plays as a traditional parkland design suited to the public golf mission of South Carolina's state park system. The routing incorporates the natural topography without dramatic earthmoving, and several holes feature elevated tees or greens that emphasize the rolling nature of the land. Water comes into play on a handful of holes, including a small lake that affects strategy on the layout's closing stretch.
As part of the state park system, Cheraw State Park Golf Course serves both local golfers and visitors to the park, which also offers camping, hiking, and lake recreation. The facility operates year-round and provides accessible golf in a region where the Sandhills terrain has historically supported course development. The combination of natural setting and straightforward design makes it a representative example of mid-century public course architecture in the Carolinas.
Reviews
Have played it twice. Felt like we had the course to ourselves both times. Cannot imagine there’s a better course for the same price anywhere in America, despite one of my least favorite golf hole designs of all time.
