CHECHESSEE CREEK CLUB
🇺🇸 Okatie, SC, USA
Designed by Ben Crenshaw, Bill Coore
Chechessee Creek Club quietly hums with a Lowcountry charm, steeped in a tradition of unpretentious, member-driven golf. The course itself is a testament to classic design principles, subtly challenging rather than overtly penal.
Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the routing meanders through former pine plantations and native wetlands characteristic of the Okatie region. The terrain, gently rolling with subtle elevation changes, favors strategic play over brute force. Wide fairways encourage aggressive tee shots, but tight approaches and cleverly contoured greens demand creativity and touch. Favoring a natural, understated aesthetic, the course blends seamlessly into its environment, offering a pure golfing experience devoid of artifice.
While it has never hosted a major championship, Chechessee Creek's appeal lies in its exclusivity and devotion to the game's traditions. Members, drawn primarily from the surrounding Bluffton and Hilton Head communities, value camaraderie and a walking-only culture. The club is known for its unhurried pace, and the 19th hole often extends well into the evening, fueled by local oysters and spirited conversation.
Reviews
Very enjoyable lowcounty course. Good destination club with a focus on fun and golf. Has some stiff competition as it is often compared to Secession just a few miles away which will always take the crown with their views and allure. Ball striking and wedge accuracy is a premium here
Spent a few days at Chechessee last week (mid Dec). This was my first time there and it lived up to the hyper. Super laid back, very fun and perfectly maintained layout, awesome caddies, and creek tea.
Played it over 100x. Short course is coming which will be a welcome addition. Probably the most underrated set of par 3’s I can think of. The more you play it the more you come to appreciate it.
