CHARTIERS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Designed by Willie Park Jr.
Chartiers Country Club, nestled in the rolling hills just southwest of Pittsburgh, began as a haven for industrialists seeking respite and recreation at the dawn of the 20th century. The course itself, while not widely known nationally, presents a classic parkland challenge, rewarding strategic play over brute force. Its gently contoured fairways and relatively small, subtly sloped greens—a signature of the era—demand thoughtful club selection and precise approach shots.
Originally laid out by Emil Loeffler, with later refinements from Ron Forse, Chartiers emphasizes accuracy and course management. Fairways lined with mature trees penalize errant drives, and strategically placed bunkers guard the greens, demanding that players think their way around the course. Local lore speaks of a demanding stretch on the back nine, often the site of both triumphs and disasters in member competitions.
Beyond the course, Chartiers fosters a strong sense of community among its members, many of whom have belonged for generations. Informal gatherings and club-sponsored events are common, building a camaraderie that is as much a part of the Chartiers experience as the golf itself. The club's history is woven into the fabric of the surrounding community, a place where tradition and local pride meet.
Reviews
Chartiers got that classic flow. A Willie Park design with some real Pittsburgh grit. You miss right off the tee, you’re burnt. Greens always runnin’ quick, pure speed, but that mix of grass gives ‘em a funky bounce sometimes. New bunkers? Mad creative, got style. I just hate when the ball disappears in that tall grass. Still, you can tell they been puttin’ in work. Took an okay layout and made it shine like chrome. Course lookin’ fresh, playin’ strong. Props to Chartiers! It’s solid club, clean vibe, and pure respect to the old-school roots.
A tasteful Willy Park jr design Chartiers is delightful. A par 70 that’s short yardage lulls you into trouble. Deceptive fairway contouring makes hitting a fairway an accomplishment and the firm+fast+subtle breaking greens makes playing out of the fairway all the more important. 0 water hazards and very little true OB should equal a straightforward round but Chartiers defends itself with its greens and harsh bunkering. It isn’t the number of bunkers, there are not a lot, it’s the design of the bunkers. Similar to bunkers across the pond the bunkers here are usually flat bottomed meaning you can roll right up against a lip. Unlike the bunkers overseas there isn’t a sod face, instead the faces are less steep and angled meaning easier outs. The catch is that these faces are uncut and having high fescue grass covering them. This means seeing your ball disappear into a bunker is only half the battle as you have to hope you ball stays in the sand rather than deal with the guessing game that is the fescue face. There’s only 2 par 5s on the course 9&18 both of which are well designed but it’s the variety of par 4s that really shine here. The 2nd hole has a centerline tree in the fairway and it might be the best hole on property. Paired with thought provoking holes like the 15th and 6th this is a course you could play 1000 times and not get bored. It’s also worth mentioning that the par 3s are all relatively short but have by far the hardest and smallest greens on the course. Even hitting these greens doesn’t guarantee a 2 putt par. While the driving range was very average and I prefer more traditional par 72 routings Chartiers country club is in excellent condition and a must play track if given the chance.
