CHAPEL HILL COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Chapel Hill, NC, USA
Designed by Gene Hamm

Chapel Hill Country Club occupies rolling terrain in the university town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Gene Hamm designed the course, which opened in the mid-1960s and reflects the architectural sensibilities of that era in the Carolinas—tree-lined fairways, modest elevation changes, and greens that reward accurate approach play. The layout takes advantage of the natural topography common to the North Carolina Piedmont, with hardwoods framing holes and occasional creeks coming into play.
The course serves a membership drawn largely from the University of North Carolina community and Chapel Hill residents. The routing moves through mature woodland, and several holes feature doglegs that require thoughtful club selection from the tee. Water hazards appear on a handful of holes, typically as lateral features rather than forced carries. The greens tend toward traditional shapes and sizes, with enough contour to test short game skills without resorting to severe undulation.
Chapel Hill Country Club functions as a neighborhood club with an emphasis on family programming and regular member play. The setting provides a quiet, wooded atmosphere within close proximity to the university campus and downtown Chapel Hill. The course has undergone periodic updates to bunkers and drainage over the decades, maintaining playability while preserving the original Hamm routing and character.
Reviews
The old stomping grounds. It’s short, tight at times with OB lurking to ruin your round on what is otherwise a very gettable course. Probably have over 1K rounds on this track. Front nine needs a draw. Back nine needs a fade. Green surfaces are typically outstanding and push the envelope of fairness for member guest play.
