SOUTHERN HILLS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Tulsa, OK, USA
Designed by Perry Maxwell

Southern Hills, a titan of American golf, stakes its reputation on demanding championships won and lost on its unforgiving greens. Nestled amidst the rolling terrain of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the course exemplifies Golden Age design sensibilities, emphasizing strategic shot-making over brute power. The course now favors a balanced game, punishing wayward shots but rewarding calculated risks.
Originally crafted by Perry Maxwell, Southern Hills has seen significant enhancements over the years, most recently by Gil Hanse, ensuring its relevance for the modern game. Its undulating fairways, strategic bunkering, and notorious creek demand astute course management. The club has hosted several major championships including multiple U.S. Opens and PGA Championships, solidifying its place as a true test for the world's best players.
Beyond the course itself, Southern Hills cultivates a culture rooted in tradition and camaraderie. It's a place where the region's business leaders mingle and compete, sharing stories and a deep appreciation for the game. The club is well regarded within golfing circles, though perhaps not as widely discussed outside of them. And for those who play here, Southern Hills serves as both a proving ground and a timeless reminder of golf's enduring appeal.
Reviews
Incredible place and experience. Obviously one of the best things about the club is the history behind everything. Major champions have walked these grounds and it is super cool to see all the past names. The golf course itself is phenomenal. The greens are small and slopy. You really need to try and hit drives into the proper positions on some of these holes. Par 3’s are long and approaches into greens cannot be long. Everything is in near perfect shape. When we were there, there had been a lot of rain lately so it wasn’t as fast and firm as normal but still plenty fast. Everyone on the staff was very accommodating and probably one of the best pro shops around. So many options. The 18th hole is an absolute beast but was so cool getting up to that green. They only allow carts 3 months out of the year and it just happened to be one of the months. We really wanted to walk but because of the temps everyone decided carts were the better option. Those things FLY! I took my son and we played 36 holes in 1 day here. During the twilight round he told “this was the best day I have ever had.” Sure made me feel like a great Father. If I had one negative thing to say it would be the new sand. They just put new sand in all the bunkers and to me it felt like from bunker to bunker it was different. Some balls came out softer and some came out harder. Was a struggle to try and figure out how they would come out. Wonderful place and I hope to play it again someday!
Just a truly special place, with masterful routing and diabolical greens. Big time 2nd shot course with it being fairly forgiving off the tee. Landing areas are tiny on the greens, with tons of runoff areas on all sides. Lightning quick bent greens, with severe undulations. First class experience all around on hollowed grounds.
If I could only play one course for the rest of my days, I think it would have to be Southern Hills. The views, the history, the greens and the service are unmatched. Almost every hole looks somewhat gettable from the tee box and rewards great execution but miss on the wrong side of the green or fairway and you are in for a double or more. Phenomenal country club!
A true Perry Maxwell gem that is my new #1 after my most recent trip there. Southern Hills is as good as it gets, classic routing with greens rolling into the next tee box. Incredibly challenging green complexes, and a signature uphill 18th hole. Southern Hills never disappoints and gets better everytime you go. A true major test
incredible course and test of golf. this stands out as one of the best championship golf courses in the world. the bunkering is incredible and the challenges presented in the short game are so much fun to try and solve. the service at the club is second to none and you get a good taste of Oklahoma hospitality.
Pure.
Perry out did himself here and Gil Hanse redefined that in 2019. Shcc is dawg of a track always plays difficult but nevertheless mint conditions all around. Practice facilities are exceed any expectations and not to mention the countless major championship stops.
