RIDGEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Paramus, NJ, USA
Designed by A .W. Tillinghast
Ridgewood Country Club, nestled in the rolling hills of Paramus, New Jersey, is a testament to the enduring legacy of early 20th-century golf architecture, its championship pedigree inextricably woven with the history of the game itself. The property reflects the design era with its emphasis on natural hazards and strategic shot-making. The course, a masterful blend of demanding par-4s and risk-reward par-5s, tests a player's ability to both navigate its doglegs and manage its undulating greens. Faders are sometimes preferred here.
A.W. Tillinghast, a name synonymous with Golden Age design, originally sculpted Ridgewood's 27 holes. Subsequent renovations by prominent architects have honored Tillinghast's original vision. Ridgewood has hosted the 1935 Ryder Cup, the 2007 and 2009 Barclays, the 2010 Northern Trust Open, and the 2022 Northern Trust, cementing its place as a stage for golfing excellence.
While not globally recognized as a top-tier venue, Ridgewood remains highly regarded in the Northeast, prized for its challenging layout and pristine conditioning. The club fosters a more reserved membership, a stark contrast to the modern country club scene, where the rhythm of play and classic design takes precedence.
Reviews
I was lucky to grow up there and knew it then. It’s cast in the shadows of Winged Foot and Baltusrol but Ridgewood is so balanced, reflective of Tillinghast and offers so many good holes over the three 9’s. I believe the composite course used for big championships is a wonderfully devised routing of the best 18 holes. Greens are mostly understated but 3 East,7 East, 6 Center, 5 West, and 8 West have flare and all are distinctly different.
The Champ layout is really a great test for every level. The meat of the course is in the middle with a few converted Par 5’s, a long par 3, and the 5 and Dime (12).A Tilly classic
